Your Lenovo computer is slow, crashes, or displays repeated errors. You’ve tried everything: uninstalling programs, running antivirus, freeing up disk space. Nothing works. Resetting is then the most radical solution to start fresh. This guide walks you through the process step by step, whether your machine is still functioning or refuses to start.

Lenovo Reset and Factory Image: A Distinction to Know

Many people confuse two very different operations. The “Reset this PC” feature built into Windows reinstalls the operating system but does not restore the software pre-installed by Lenovo. You get a clean Windows installation, not your machine as it was when purchased.

If your goal is to restore the original state with Lenovo software, you need to go through the manufacturer’s recovery partition. Each model has its own instructions, accessible via the Novo button (a small button or pinhole located on the side or next to the power button).

To easily reset a Lenovo computer, you first need to identify the method suitable for your situation. The rest of this guide details each of them.

Reset a Lenovo PC from Windows Settings

This method works when your computer starts normally. It is suitable for most cases: slowdowns, persistent software errors, preparation before resale.

Access the Reset Function

Open Settings (Windows key + I). Go to System, then Recovery. You will find the “Reset this PC” option.

Choose to Keep or Remove Your Files

Windows offers two options when starting the procedure:

  • Keep my files: the system is reinstalled, your personal documents remain in place, but manually installed applications are removed.
  • Remove everything: Windows wipes the entire disk, including your photos, documents, and software. This is the option to choose before giving away or selling your machine.
  • Clean the drive (sub-option of “Remove everything”): makes recovering old files much more difficult. The process takes longer, but it protects your personal data from a curious potential buyer.

You may have noticed that after a reset, some people find their old photos again? That’s because they didn’t enable the drive cleaning option. For resale, always check this option.

Cloud Download or Local Reinstallation

Windows then asks how to recover the system files. Cloud download fetches a fresh copy of Windows from Microsoft servers. Local reinstallation uses the files already present on your disk.

Prefer the cloud if your system has corrupted files or if the recovery partition seems damaged. With a slow connection, local reinstallation remains faster, but it does not necessarily include the latest updates.

Lenovo Novo Button: Reset When the PC Won’t Start

Your screen remains black, Windows loops on a loading screen, or a forgotten password blocks you. The Novo button is the emergency access point specific to Lenovo machines.

Find and Use the Novo Button

This button often appears as a small hole on the left side of the laptop, near the power port. On some desktop models (IdeaCentre), it is located at the back or on the side of the case.

Completely turn off the computer. Press the Novo button with a paperclip or the tip of a pen. A menu appears with several options, including “System Recovery.”

Start System Recovery

By selecting “System Recovery,” the Lenovo recovery partition takes over. It restores the computer to its factory configuration, including pre-installed software. The process usually takes between twenty minutes and an hour, depending on the model.

This method requires neither a USB drive nor an internet connection. It relies entirely on the hidden partition of the hard drive. If this partition has been deleted (for example, by manual repartitioning), the Novo button will not offer the recovery option.

Lenovo Reinstallation with a Bootable USB Drive

When the recovery partition no longer exists and Windows refuses to start, the installation from an external medium remains.

Create the Installation Media

On another functioning computer, download the media creation tool provided by Microsoft. Insert a USB drive of at least 8 GB. The tool formats the drive and copies the Windows installation files onto it.

Boot from the USB Drive

Insert the USB drive into the Lenovo to be reset. At startup, press F12 to access the boot menu. Select the USB drive as the boot device. The Windows installation assistant starts.

Follow the steps: choose the language, possibly enter the license key, select the disk. Format the main partition before installing to start with a clean disk.

Precautions Before Any Lenovo Computer Reset

Before pressing any button, a few checks can prevent frustrating situations.

  • Back up your files to an external drive or cloud service. A complete reset deletes everything on the system disk.
  • Check that BitLocker encryption is not enabled. If it is, find your BitLocker recovery key (often linked to your Microsoft account). Without this key, the reset may be blocked midway.
  • Note the names of the software you use daily. After the reset, you will need to reinstall them one by one.
  • Plug the computer into a power source. A power outage during the procedure can permanently damage the system.

Resetting a Lenovo is not complicated once the right method is identified. From Windows settings for common cases, via the Novo button when the system is unresponsive, or with a USB drive as a last resort. The most common pitfall remains forgetting the BitLocker key, which interrupts the process with no possibility of going back. Take five minutes to locate it before you begin.
